Bookfolding art
All these works were made from books that were rejected by second hand bookshops. I fold or bend the pages, thus creating a threedimensional object from a flat book. I try to avoid cutting as much as possible.

Dance
2019The fanned-out strips of paper seem to be moving.

Feathers
2019The pages are drawn aside and fixed with clamps. This gives the effect as if the book opens its wings.

Mandala
2019I thought of this idea because I like to fold mandala's from colored paper. The pages are partly cut loose and small bits are cut away, but I didn't use glue.

hearts
2018A series of hearts folded from little books of a dutch series called 'boekenweekgeschenkjes'. I am still creating new variations. These hearts are for sale through my webshop.

Petals
2018Made from six books. Both the books and the pages represent petals.

Waterfall
2018The paper seems to flow out of this book like a waterfall.

Circle composition
2017This work explores the limits of what is possible in precision bookfolding. The thinnest strips of paper are less than a millimeter wide. The design is -loosely- inspired by work from prof. Lionel Levine, who has a knack for finding math problems that lead to papers with fascinating illustrations.

Feelers
2017Strips of paper of varying length and width curled and stapled together, gives an intriguing line pattern.

Shapes
2017Flowing shapes in different depths form an abstract tableau.

Stairs
2017A complex interlocking work of four folded books.

Vortex 2
2017For a long time I intended to make a different version of 'Vortex'. But now it turned out even more different than I intended!

Waves
2016The waves are according to a sinusoidal function.

Wings
2016This work I made without a detailed plan in advance. The pages are curled, and occasionally glued.

Swans
2016In this work I made use of the difference in color between the gray text and the white margin. This way the white of the 'swans' is accentuated. The idea came to me because of a remark about the colors by grafic artist Leonie van Santvoort.

Bell curve
2015I folded the shape of the normal probability distribution. This function is well known in cartesian coordinates, but here it is presented in polar coordinates.

Conchoid
2015This work shows segments of three curves, namely a circle (the ends of the unfolded pages), a straight line, and the third curve is a conchoid of Nicomedes. It is formed naturally by the ends of the folded pages. I think it is remarkable that Nicomedes studied this curve before there were books.

Book end
2015In this work I display the bottom of the pages, rather than standing the book upright. The silhouet appears on a part of a circular disk, rather than on a slightly curved rectangular surface. If this design is in use as a book end, the figurine appears to keep the books from falling.

Curves
2015I made zigzag folds in the pages of this book. As a result you see three curves. The inner and outer one have the same shape, because the middle one is a half circle.

Don't close me
2015I thought of this image from the expression 'a book you can't close'.

Fractal
2015By overlapping the folded pages in a certain order, a fractal pattern emerges.

Pageturner
2015This book turns its own page. Most pages I folded, but I curled a few too.

Ring
2015I wanted to create the illusion of a floating ring in the book. The upper half is folded inward, the lower half outward.

Circles
2015This work shows various (half)circles, only some of which are concentric.

Bookflower
2014This thin booklet looks a lot more radiant with the pages fanned out.

Reading
2014In this book I folded the silhouet of a reading woman. This requires a few hundred pages: the smallest details are formed by folds of less than a millimeter, in a single page.

Recycling
2014This work expresses precisely what I do: I give an old book new value by folding an image into it.

Vortex
2014Sometimes you seem to get sucked into a book. I wanted to express that image with this book.

Yin Yang
2014It was quite a challenge to fold the yin yang symbol in a book, such that it shows the right proportions. I represented the colors clack and white by 'folded inward' and 'not folded'.

Sine and cosine
2013This is a math book, so I thought a math theme would be appropriate.
